A Day In Ramadan: Faith and Anticipation

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful
    PREFACE

Indeed all praise belongs to Allah, we praise Him, seek His aid and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our souls and evil of our actions. Whomsoever Allah guides there is none to misguide and whomsoever Allah misguides there is none to guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah without any partners and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

O Allah send Your Mercy on Muhammad and his posterity as You sent Your mercy on Abraham and his posterity. You are the Most Praised, The Most Glorious. O Allah, send Your Blessings on Muhammad and his posterity as You have blessed Abraham and his posterity. You are the Most praised, The Most Glorious.

    To proceed:

    O beloved brothers and sisters,

The breezes of mercy have blown, the glad tidings have arrived with bonding to those who had been divided, amnesty to the guilty and the setting free to those who deserve the fire. What great glad tidings!

Who is more honorable than one whom was honored by Allah the Greatest, the Guardian? Who is more satisfied than one whom He exclusively ennobled? Who is closer to Him than one whom He selected for the greatest victory? What worry could one have after being commended by Allah the Wise, the Powerful, saying “Verily, the pious and righteous will be in Delight (paradise)” [Quran 82:13].

Satan has been chained, Fire has been put out, and the command of desires has been sent into the exile.
There are no excuses left for the wrong-doers.
O clouds of remissness on the hearts heave! O suns of piety and faith rise!
O records of deeds of the fasting ascend! O hearts of the fasting ones worship in humbleness and humility! O feet of the praying ones in the night kneel to thy Lord and prostrate! O eyes of the hard workers do not fall to sleep! O land of desires swallow your water, and O sky of selfishness withhold your rain!
O wills of the loving ones do not be satisfied with anything but Allah!

For on these days, the table spread has been extended for the fasting ones, such that nobody is left uninvited: “O our people! Respond (with obedience) to Allah’s Caller." [Quran 46:31]

O wills of the believers respond with haste. Blessings be to whomever responds righteously, and woe to those who were expelled from the gate and were banished.

O beloved brothers and sisters ...
The messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Qadr with (sincere) faith and anticipation (for Allah's rewards) then all his past sins shall be forgiven. Whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and anticipation, then all his past sins shall be forgiven. "[Bukhari and Muslim]
He also said (may peace and blessings be upon him) "…and whoever establishes the prayer on the night of Qadr with sincere faith and anticipation, then all his past sins shall be forgiven." [Bukhari and Muslim]

Whenever Ramadan welcomes us, I am halted by the condition of faith and anticipation my thirst for understanding was never quenched by what I read in the books of interpretation. So I began collecting all the hadeeths in which anticipation
was mentioned, and it drew my attention more to find out that the prophet (may peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned it whenever a great deed or reward was brought up:

Like Jihad, for example, the struggle in the cause of Allah. It has been narrated on the authority o Abu Qatadah that the Messenger of Allah ( may peace and blessings be upon him) stood up among them (companions) to deliver his sermon in which he told them that Jihad in the cause of Allah and belief in Allah are the most meritorious of deeds. A man stood up and said: “Messenger of Allah, do you think that if I am killed in the cause of Allah, my sins will be blotted out from me?” The Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Yes, in case you are killed in the cause of Allah and you were patient and anticipating (for Allah's reward) and you always fought facing the enemy, never turning your back upon them.” Then he added, “What have you just asked (now)?” [Wishing to have further assurance from him for his satisfaction], the man asked again, “Do you think if I am killed in the cause of Allah, all my sins will be obliterated from me?” The Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Yes, if you were patient and anticipating and always fought facing the enemy and never turning your back upon him, (then all your sins would be forgiven) except debt. Angel Gabriel has just told me this.” [Narrated by Muslim]

Secondly, patience during severe hardships, as Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, the wife of the Prophet (may peace and blessings be upon him) said: I asked the messenger of Allah about the plague. He told me that it was a punishment sent by Allah on whom he wished, and Allah made it a source of mercy for the believers, for if one in the time of an epidemic plague stays in his town with patience, anticipation for Allah's reward and believing that nothing will befall him except what Allah has written for him, he will get the reward of a martyr." [Bukhari]

Also, following funeral processions. Narrated Abu Huraira: the messenger of Allah said, "Whoever accompanies the funeral procession of a Muslim out of (sincere) faith and anticipation (for Allah's reward) and remains with it till the funeral prayer is offered and the burial ceremonies are over, will return with a reward of two carats. Each Carat is like the size of (Mount) Uhud. He who offers the funeral prayer only and returns before the burial, will return with the reward of one carat only."[Bukhari]

It appeared to me that I should dig into this noble meaning, and therefore be able the collect any good intentions that can be anticipated during Ramadan. Meanwhile, I will work through faith; how to perform such acts in the perfect manner, so that they are in the likelihood of acceptance.

I rolled up my sleeves for the hard work ahead of me, and Allah bestowed some of His support upon me that I was able to write this letter (One day in Ramadan: Faith and Anticipation). I hereby ask Allah to accept this work sincerely for Him, to be honest in what I intended, and that goodness would prevail through this work, in request for reward and everything that draws closer to Allah.

This – and Allah knows best – is like an effort of a lazy, and a power of a weak who barely moves. Therefore if I was right in any detail, then it is for you and you have not a worry. And if I was erred then it is on me, and I accept your blame.
I seek refuge in Allah from false sayings, erroneous opinions and vanity. O Allah, forgive my slips and daring mischief, and let not my religion be only on my tongue, and grant me honesty in my intention, words and deeds.

Oh Allah, I seek refuge in you from poorness unless to you, from humiliation unless to you, from fear unless of you. Oh Allah, I seek refuge in you from speaking falsely, behaving sinfully, or being arrogant in You. Oh Allah, I renounce my abilities and capabilities before You, and I seek shelter in Your Ability and Capability, there is no god but You, Glory and Praise is all due to You. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers. Oh Allah! Nothing is easy except what you have made easy. If you wish, you can turn the difficulty to ease.

A Day In Ramadan: Faith and Anticipation

    *** The Preface

    What Does Anticipation Mean?

My beloved ones on the path of Allah,

Scholars have said that anticipation is: the initiative to seek reward and obtain it using different types of good actions, and doing them in the required manner in order to seek their reward.

In other words, anticipation is an intention to gain the fruits that are promised for a certain good deed, and this – naturally – is an action of the heart not the tongue, that leads the self to be keen, the heart to look forward to, and determination to seek the great rewards behind this good deed.
Allah has asked us to seek Paradise and to work for it. He says: And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it while he is a believer, then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated, thanked and rewarded (by Allah).al-Isra 19

Therefore the striving which will be rewarded is the striving of he who desires the Hereafter.
He says: and whoever desires a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give him thereof. And We shall reward the grateful. [al-Imran 145]

Doing good deeds is promised to be granted great rewards in return, in order for the good servant to anticipate these rewards. In this way, the anticipation motivates us and drives us towards Allah, Exalted and Glorified is He.

    My beloved brothers and sisters,

There are great benefits in anticipation, because it is:
    • (1) A form of compliance to the order of Allah and following His messenger (may peace and blessings be upon him.

    • (2) An evidence of good faith and perfect Islam.

    • (3) A path towards sincerity, away from hypocrisy; because one would not await thanking or appreciation from anyone in return for doing good deeds anymore.

    • (4) A sign of good trust in Allah.

    • (5) A way to make one satisfied, happy-hearted and confident in what the Lord is saving for His servants.

    • (6) A tool to purify the good deeds and add more blessing to them, so that one's account of faith increases.

    • (7) A reason to strengthen one's determination and charge one's will.

    • (8) A method to increases one's rank in the Eyes of his/her Lord. For the messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) said to Saad bin Abi Waqqas, "Verily, any deed you do in which you sincerely seek Allah's pleasure will raise you in ranks and honor." [Bukhari]

    • (9) Finally, having anticipation all the time makes one's life full of acts of worship, and worship is a wide path leading to the love of Allah.

    • (10) Through anticipation you will be granted rewards of deeds you couldn't do for a legitimate excuse. The prophet (may peace and blessings be upon him) said,"If a servant falls ill or travels temporarily, he will be rewarded exactly the same as what he used to do when he was healthy and residing in his town."[Bukhari]

    My friend,
The study of the intentions and _object_ives of good deeds is one of the most important things that should be addressed by any serious worker for the Hereafter.

It was reported that Yahya bin Abi Katheer said: "Learn your intentions; for they are more important than the deeds themselves."

We have to learn how to evoke the right intentions for our good deeds; this processed requires training which can be done through reading the wisdoms of the Salaf1 regarding the very special hints and secrets of worships, the collection of virtues that Islam brought in all aspects of life and then establishing these intentions inside the heart.

We may ask: Why can we not find - for example - in the words of the Salaf what should be anticipated in each deed if anticipation had this importance?

The answer: Because those people had clean, pure hearts; hearts that were so attached to Allah that light was coming out of them, therefore they were anticipating by their pure instinct.

Ubay bin Ka'b said,“There was a man from the Ansaar2 whom I did not know anyone who lived farther away from the mosque than he did. He never missed prayers, and so he was told once: if you bought a donkey to ride during the darkness and the heat.”
He replied, “I would not be pleased if my house was next to mosque. I want my footpath to the mosque and my return to be written in my records.” The prophet – may peace and blessings upon him – said, “Allah has collected all of that for you.”

In another narration, “and I went to him and said, 'why don't you buy a donkey to avoid the heat and the insects of earth?' He said, 'By Allah, I would not even wish to have my house next door of the Muhammad's house.' So I actually dragged him all the way until we reached the prophet – may peace and blessings be upon him – and I told him what the man said, and the prophet called the man and told him that he will get what he hoped for, 'You shall be given what you have anticipated.' said the prophet – may peace and blessings be upon him.” [narrated by Muslim and Ibn Maja – and the latter is the narrator in this way and was classified as Sahih by alAlbani]

This is how they lived - may Allah be pleased with them -. As for us, we still need to learn how to make intentions, how to anticipate the reward and how to struggle with ourselves to apply these meanings until they result in morals.

So, come join us... Let us all open the pages of good deeds that should be done in Ramadan on its two wings "faith and anticipation", while asking Allah for support and guidance; for He is the Owner of those and the most Capable to give them.

According to Abdullah Ibn Amr that the messenger of Allah, may Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "Say as they say (means the Muazeneen). If you finish then supplicate and Allah will answer you". [Narrated by Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawood and Al Nisaee and Ibn Habban and corrected by Al Albani 4403 in Sahih Al Jame'e].

It is better to listen to the Athan in the Mosque following in that our righteous ancestors.. Saeed Ibn Al Moseyed (may Allah have mercy upon him), explained that he never missed the congregational prayer performed at the mosque for over forty years. He was listening to the Athan from the Muazen at the mosque.

If not, then reply the call of prayer. Don’t lean to life and it is trivial issues. You will never get what Allah has except by His obedience. And there is no good in something that prevents you from the remembrance of Allah or prevents from praying. Are you going to comply?

May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "if you hear the Athan, reply the call of Allah" (Narrated by At Tabarani in Al Kabeer and corrected by Al Albani 609 in Sahih Al Jannah].

Now, prepare yourself for the prayer. The first thing is to perform ablution:

Perform the ablution , and have this meaning in you heart: Oh Allah who purifies the bodies with water, purify my heart with repentance from sins. If you finish the ablution, say I bear witness that there is no God but Allah with no partner and that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.

      And anticipate with that:

1- Expiation of the sins from the parts you wash during the ablution. Hopefully the traces of sins depart the heart. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "if the Muslim performs the ablution his sins will get out from his ears, his eyes, his hands, and his feet.. So, if he finishes, he will be forgiven". [Narrated by Ahmad and Al Tabarani and Al Albani said Hassan 448 in Sahih Al Jamie].

2- Achieving half of your faith.

May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "The ablution is half of the faith of a believer [Narrated by Muslim].

3- The greatest reason to forgive your sins especially when it is cold

May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "three things, Performing a perfect ablution during the hard times (like cold), walking to the mosques and waiting for the prayer after the prayer … All those three expiate you from sins completely [Narrated by Abu Ya'ala and Al Hakim, Al Baihaqi and corrected by Al Albani 926 in Sahih Al Jamei].

4- If you sustain ablution, you will be a believer

May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "Only the believer will remain with his ablution (sustaining it at all times). [Narrated by Ibn Majah, At Tabarani and corrected by Al Albani 953 in Sahih Al Jamei].

5- You will have Ghurah (special mark) during the day of resurrection. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "My people will be called on the day of resurrection and they will be Ghuraran Muhajaleen (with a special mark) as a result of their ablution." [Agreed upon].

And don't forget the Siwak. It is the reason for the satisfaction of the Merciful and recommended by the prophet may Allah send prayers and peace upon him. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "Siwak is a purification for the mouth and satisfaction for the Lord". [Narrated by Al Nisaee and Ibn Khuzaima in their Sahih and corrected by Al Albani 209 in Sahih At Targheeb].

May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "If I had not found it hard for my followers or the people, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with siwak for every prayer.and to make ablution before each prayer”. [Narrated by Ahmad and Al Albani said Hassan Sahih 200 in Sahih At Targheeb].

And after finishing the ablution, say: I bear witness that there is no God but Allah alone with no partner and his Mohammad is his slave and messenger. How perfect is Allah and I praise you, I bear witness that there is no God but you, ask Your forgiveness and turn to you in repentance.

And anticipate by performing this that the eight doors of paradise will open for you. This is a great gift saved for you to be unfolded on the day of resurrection.

May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: : " If anyone amongst you performs the ablution, and then completes the ablution well and then says: I testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His Messenger, the eight gates of paradise would be opened for him and he may enter by whichever of them he wishes. ".[Narrated by Muslim].

May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "whoever performs the ablution and said how perfect is Allah and I praise You, I bear witness that there is no God but You ask your forgiveness and turn to you in repentance. This will be written and then will be kept in a container which will never be broken until the Day of Judgment." [Narrated by Al Tabarani in Al Awsatt and it the chain of Al Sahih and narrated by Al Nisaee and he said at the end of the Hadith it will be stamped and put under the throne and will never be broken until the day of judgment (look to Sahih At Targheeb 225).

Praying Maghreb On time in the mosque:

Now you will head to the mosque to perform the Maghrib prayer, if u haven't already being there waiting for the prayer to be called upon. Don't forget the dhikr u say when you leave the mosque.

And anticipate: Allah's guidance, His protection as well as keeping Satan away from you.

According to Anas that the messenger of Allah, may Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said:
"if a man leaves his house and says In the Name of Allah, I depend on Allah, no power no might except with Allah. He will be told, you are guided, sufficed and protected. Satan will also keep away from his way."[Narrated by At Termethei and Al Nisaee'e and Ibn Habban in his Sahih and classified As Sahis (1605) in Sahih At Targheeb].

Enjoy the glad tidings of this easy reward and
anticipate these steps.. Because of that our prophet warned us to anticipate its reward and he said to Bani Salma: "Don't you anticipate your steps to the mosque?" [Narrated by Al Bukhari].

1- The reward of Haj: may Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "whoever walks to an obligatory congressional prayer, it will be considered like Haj". [Narrated by At Tabarani in al Kabeer and classified as Hasan by Al Albani (6556)].

2- Every step equals a good deed and erases a sin. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "That is because if someone performs a good ablution then comes to the mosque just for the prayer. Every step he steps Allah will raise him a degree in heavens and will erase a sin. [Agreed Upon].

3- The great reward: may Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "The people with greatest reward of the prayer are those who are walking the farthest". [Agreed Upon].

4- On the day of resurrection, there is nothing but darkness no ray of sun or moon .. all you have will be the light of your good deeds

May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said:
"Give the glad tidings to whoever walk in the darkness to the mosque. They will be rewarded by light during the day of resurrection". [Narrated by Abu Dawood and At Termethie and classified as Sahih by Al Albani (2823) in Sahih al Jame'e].

Allah grant those who walk to the mosques in the darkness with a bright light on the day of resurrection [Narrated by At Tabarani in Al Awsatt and classified as Sahih in Al Albani (317) in Sahih At Tarheeb].

5- You will be considered in a prayer as you leave your house until you return back.Anticipate every moment of your time to be in your good balance. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "If the man performs ablution and goes to the mosque for the prayer, his writing angle will write ten good deeds for each step. The one who is sitting awaiting the prayer is like the Qanit (obedient to Allah). And he is considered in a prayer from the moment he leaves his house until he returns back. [Narrated by Imam Ahmad, Ibn Habban, Al Hakim and classified as Sahih by Al Albani (343) in Sahih Al Jame'e].

        6- "The Charity" reward:

may Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said:
"Each step he walks to the prayer is considered as a charity".[Agreed Upon].

7- The reward of "ribat" remaining on duty to guard from an enemy for the sake of Allah.

May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:
Should I not suggest to you that by which Allah obliterates the sins and elevates the ranks (of a man). They (the hearers) said: Yes, Messenger of Allah. He said: Performing the ablution thoroughly despite odds, tranverside of more paces towards the mosque, and waiting for the next prayer after observing a prayer, These are like "Ribat" for you, and he said it three times to confirm the message." [Narrated by Muslim].

In order to know the value of the one who guards a part of an Islam land from an enemy, listen to this great Hadith. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said:
"Guarding from an enemy for a month is better than fasting your whole life. Whoever dies during guarding from enemies for the sake of Allah, will be safe from the greatest fear and he will have his provision from paradise back and forth and he will have the reward of the one who is guarding from enemies until Allah resurrect him". [Narrated At Tabarani classified as Sahih by Al Albani (3479) in Sahih Al Jame's].

8- These steps are a reason for your happiness in life and hereafter and will purify you from your sins. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: The penances: staying in a mosque after the prayers, your paces to perform congressional prayers. Perfecting ablution at odd times and Allah Al Mighty said: "Oh Mohammad you are right. Whoever does that will live a good life and will die a good death. He will be pure from his sins as if he was a newly born. [Narrated by Ahmad and At Termethei and classified Sahih by Al Albani (59) in Sahih Al Jame'e].

9- You earn a house in paradise each time you head to the mosque. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "Whoever goes to the mosque in the morning, afternoon or evening, Allah will build him a house in paradise when going to and forth".[agreed upon].

10- You are in the care and guarantee of Allah Al Mighty. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said: "Whoever leaves to mosque, he is fail-safe by Allah". [Narrated by Abu Dawood and Ibn Habban classified as Sahih by Al Albani (321) in Sahih At Targheeb].

Then if you enter the mosque do not forget the "entrance" dhikr. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him, said:
"If one of you entered the mosque, he should say peace be upon the prophet and say Oh Allah open the doors of your mercy for me".[Narrated by Abu Dawood and classified Sahih by Al Albani (515 in Sahih Al Jame'e].

And have the intention that you attend this prayer to satisfy Allah. Have the glade tidings that Allah is happy at you. If the Lord is happy and laughs at you, you will never be deprived .

May Allah send his prayers and peace upon him said:
"If any of you performs ablution perfectly and then comes to the mosque just for the prayer, Allah will smile for him as the family smiles for their returning one"[ Narrated by Ibn Khuzima, and classified as Sahih by Al-albani(303) in Sahih Altargheeb]

Now you are a guest at the house of Allah. Have the glade tiding of Allah's generosity .

May Allah send his prayers and peace upon him said:
" Whoever perform a perfect ablution at his house and then come to the mosque. He is going to be a visitor to Allah. And Allah is going to ennoble him.[ Narrated by Altabarani in Alkabeer, and classified as Hasan by Al-albani(322) in Sahih Altargheeb]

        And
anticipate : To be amongst the "seven people who will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His, when the sun will be so close to the heads and people will sink in their sweat and suffer from the severe heat"

Amongst the seven people who Allah will shade, when there is no shade except His, a man whose heart is attached to the mosque (who offers the five compulsory congregational prayers in the mosque)" [Agreed Upon]

        And have the
intention of temporary I'tiqaf (seclusion in the mosque), to have this reward.

        Then pray two Rak'ahs and
anticipate: The forgiveness of your previous sins.

May Allah send his prayers and peace upon him said:
"'If anyone performs ablution like that of mine and offers a two-rak'at prayer during which he does not think of anything else (not related to the present prayer) then his past sins will be forgiven. "Sahih bukhari"

Abu Huraira reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said to Bilal:
Bilal, narrate to me which act at the time of morning prayer you did in Islam for which you hope to receive good reward, for I heard during the night the sound of your steps before me in paradise. Bilal said: I did not do any act in Islam for which I hope to get any benefit but this that when I perform complete ablution during the night or day I observe prayer with that purification what Allah has ordained for me to pray. (Sahih Muslim)
