Assalam alaikom,
Dear brothers and sisters,

I hope that all of you are enjoying firm faith and good health. I wrote the following lines long time ago upon a request of an acquaintance who asked me to write very concise lines in this topic. However, to cover the topic of dutifulness to parents, we may need books. I present the following short paragraph as a reminder for me and for everyone who still has both of parents or one of them alive to be dutiful to them and to treat them kindly.

May Allah guide us to the right way and gather all of us in His Paradise! Amen!

Dutifulness to one’s parents

Islam urges its followers to be dutiful to their parents. Our parents took care of us when we were babies and continue to do so until their last breath. They spared no effort to provide us a stable life. They provided us with the residence, food, education, etc. Therefore, we should exert our efforts to please and satisfy them and do what they want. Disobeying and un-dutifulness to parents is considered a major sin. Allah the Almighty joined obeying Him with being dutiful to the parents due to the significance of this matter. Allaah The Almighty Says: "And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents."[Al-Israa’ verse no. 23]. Once the Prophet, peace be upon him, was asked about which parent deserve more care and kind treatment, he assured that it is the mother. One should obey one’s parents in every thing they order the one to do as long as their order does not contradict Islamic rules and Shari‘ah. If they command him to associate partners with Allah, one should not obey them. However, even in this case one should treat them kindly even if they are not believers. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): "But if they (both) strive with you to make you join in worship with Me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not, but behave with them in the world kindly"[Luqmaan verse no. 15]. One should serve and pay extra interest to one’s parents when they become old. One should not place them at the aged people house and ignore them. At last, it should be known that as you treat your parents, your children will treat you; so, treat them kindly.
