  • Why the beard

Assalamo alaykom wa rahmato ALLAH wa barakatoh
Many people (Muslims and non-Muslims) ask the following question:
Why the beard or in other word why do Muslims have beards????i
This article will give the answer Insha'Allah but just read objectively without any prejudgment.
The answer will include many steps.

    Step one:

We all know that ALLAH created us to worship him as he says in our QURAN: "We did not create the jinn and men except to worship us" (Surah adh-Dhariyyat, verse 56).
The purpose of our creation is to worship ALLAH which means that we are obliged to obey ALLAH.
Conclusion: we are obliged to worship ALLAH and obey him or we can not be Muslims.

    Step two:

Our obedience to ALLAH can not be accepted if it is not coupled with the obedience of his prophet peace be upon him. There are many verses in our QURAN that talks about this fact.
1-Obey Allah and the Messenger, but if you turn away, Allah does not love the disbelievers. (Surat Ali Imraan 32).
2-And obey Allah and the Messenger so that you may be blessed. (Surat Ali Imraan 132).
3-O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the messenger. (Surat An-Nisaa 59).
4- And whoever obeys the Messenger, obeys Allah.. (Surat An-Nisaa 80).
5-And obey Allah and His messenger. (Surat Al-Anfal 46).
There are many more verses that command the obedience of both, Allah and His Messenger (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam).
Conclusion: Obeying the Prophet (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam) is obeying Allah, so the obedience of our prophet (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam) is compulsory (Fard).

    Step three:

Allah says: Say If you do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you. (Surat Ali Imraan 31).
This verse shows that loving Allah is coupled with the following of the prophet (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam) because loving our prophet (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam) and following him, without doubt, is a part of our belief (lmân) and compulsory in Islam.
Conclusion: loving Allah = loving the prophet (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam) = following the prophet (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam), and we all know that who loves someone follows him/her all the time and s/he tries to imitate him/her in all his/her actions. (You can just ask yourself to be sure about that/mmm,,,loveeers/)

    Step four:

Our prophet (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam) says in a hadith that is narrated in many ways: "Trim closely the moustache, and let the beard flow (Grow)". (in Sahih Muslim)
Let's have a different understanding or in other word a correct one:
In the hadit; we have two verbs: "Trim" and "Let".
Grammatically: the verbs here refer to ORDER or REQUEST????
I think that anyone who can understand language will answer: refer to ORDER.
Semantically: the meaning of the hadith gives that intention of ORDER or REQUEST???
I also think that anyone who can understand language will answer: refer to ORDER.
Those who speak and understand English can easily differentiate between the expressions of giving an order and asking a request, and can get the real meaning of the hadith which is giving order.
Conclusion: the previous hadith is giving an order not asking a request.

    Finally and mathematically:

According to the previous steps in which we clarify that the obedience of our prophet(salla Allah alayhi wa sallam) is COMPULSORY (FARD), and his words and deeds are also COMPULSORY (FARD), we can easily say that the beard is FARD (COMPULSORY).
